Undertaking direct shearing of discontinuities has been a fundamental aspect of research that has produced knowledge and underpinned the development of models that can estimate the shear response of rock discontinuities. 1990 Indraratna and Haque 2000 Bahaaddini 2017), and the effects of anisotropy (e.g., Huang and Doong 1990 Jing et al. Fardin 2008 Johansson 2016), boundary conditions (e.g., Leichnitz 1985 Skinas et al. , 1974Barton and Bandis 1980 Leal-Gomes n.d. 2010 Zaré and Deák 2016), scale effects (e.g., Pratt et al. 1993 De Toledo and De Freitas 1993 Indraratna et al. 1995), effects of material infilling (e.g., Ladanyi and Archambault 1969 Papaliangas et al. Over the last years, various aspects of the mechanical response of discontinuities have been experimentally investigated including (but not limited to) roughness characterization (e.g., Barton and Choubey 1977 Kulatilake et al. Estimating discontinuity shear strength has been a topic of significant attention within the field of rock mechanics since the works of Patton (1966).
